Degenerative Cervical Arthritis and Down's Syndrome

Abstract
To the Editor: A radiographic survey of the cervical spines of 41 institutionalized patients with Down's syndrome was recently conducted for the purpose of detecting asymptomatic atlantoaxial subluxation. In addition to uncovering 6 such cases, we encountered 16 patients with various degrees of degenerative arthritis of the cervical vertebrae and intervertebral disks. One patient was found to have both conditions. Degenerative findings included osteophyte formation, subarticular sclerosis, cystic changes, fusion, and disk narrowing.
