Abstract
The herbicidal activity of sprays of o-isopropyl-n-phenyl carbonate (OINPC) upon oats and barley was tested. The aerial part of the young plants was immersed for 2-4 sec. up to 10 min. in isopropyl alcohol-water solns. containing 500, 250, or 100 ppm. of OINPC and a wetting agent. The plant growth appeared normal and there was no reduction in yield of grain. Applications (each equiy. to 5 mg. of compound/4-inch pot) made to the soil of similar plants were lethal. Oats 12-15 inches high were sprayed with acetone-water (1:2) solns. of OINPC with the soil protected from the spray in 1 case and exposed in another. The solu. was applied at the rate of 0.5 gm./sq. yd. in 20 mg. of soln. The soil-protected plants were not visibly affected, but the soil-exposed plants yielded highly significantly less grain. As a herbicide, the carbamate should be applied to the soil. This publication has 2 references indexed in Scilit:
