Abstract
The coffee berry borer (Hypothenemus hampei Ferr.) was first detected in Jamaica in 1978 when beans from the 1977 crop were being prepared for export. An island‐wide survey was carried out between June and December 1978 to establish the distribution of the beetle. Estimates of fruit damage in harvested cherry coffee ranged from zero to 85%, and a preliminary assessment gave a minimum crop loss of 210,090 kg. Factors which might have helped to disseminate the pest are discussed. Control should be implemented by containing the spread of the pest, radical improvement in levels of crop husbandry, judicious use of chemicals and elimination of wild host reservoirs. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
