Evaluating the Factor Structure of “Self-Concept” in Children: A Cautionary Note

Abstract
This article examines the factor structure of two measure's of self-concept routinely used with elementary school children: the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory and the Self-Concept and Motivation Inventory. Three distinct factors are identified, with little overlap between instruments. It is suggested that these specific instruments and other similar ones need to be examined closely for content and format before they are used by researchers or counselors as measures of the global construct of self- concept.
