Serologic Aspects of Experimental Histoplasmosis in Cattle

Abstract
The immunologic aspects of the development of histoplasmosis were examined by subclinical infection of cattle with Histoplasma capsulatum by intravenous inoculation of mycelia. Within three weeks after infection, high titers of latex-agglutinating and complement-fixing antibodies were observed. In addition, both the Hand M precipitin bands appeared within five weeks after infection. Skintest positivity was usually evident just before formation of precipitin. The present studies provide direct evidence that infection of cattle with H. capsulatum may provide a large reservoir of serum that can serve as positive controls in the serologic diagnosis of histoplasmosis.
