Abstract
The developmental challenges inherent in the stage of adolescence are particularly stressful for mildly retarded youngsters and contribute to a high incidence of behavioral disorders. The difficulties experienced by mildly retarded adolescents in separating from their parents and attaining independence, establishing a stable identity, and developing a satisfactory body image are described. Suggestions are provided as to how to interview such youngsters, and specific considerations and guidelines are proposed to effect each of the psychosocial issues noted.
