Abstract
Thirty -one black male rats, 5 months of age, were kept on ad libitum feeding, singly housed, in a room maintained at 78[degree] [plus or minus] 2[degree]F, illuminated from 600 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Day-night differences in number of mitoses were noted for the retromolar epithelium and for the connective tissue of the periodontal membrane from these rats. A comparison of these mitotic rhythms with the 24-hour periodicities in body temperature and in number of circulating eosinophils suggests that these oral structures follow the 24-hour periodic pattern of function in the organism as a whole. Distribution patterns of mitoses within the periodontal membrane and along the molar roots are also described. Keywords
