Abstract
School performance criteria, established from legislation contained within the Education Reform Act of 1988, are used to provide an analytical framework for examining school effectiveness in the UK. Fifty secondary schools in a large metropolitan education authority provided the data for the analysis. The findings suggest the criteria chosen by the government are not mutually exclusive measures of aspects of a school's performance. Instead, they are found to be highly sensitive to socio-economic influence. These findings, it is suggested, have implications for other, and less doubtful means of measuring school effectiveness. Keywords
