Abstract
Although cosmetic products offer significant benefit, their potential for adverse effect is often overlooked. Nail products ranked second only to skin care products in the frequency of associated contact dermatitis. Nail cosmetics ranked fourth in a United States study that compared all types of cosmetic preparations. The percentages of patients reacting to nail cosmetics was 13% and 8%, respectively, in these two studies. This article will review the reactions to various nail cosmetic preparations, particularly prostheses, enamels, polish removers, and hardeners. In addition, the damaging effects of nail instrumentation, as well as nail changes secondary to other types of cosmetic products, will be discussed. Keywords
