Abstract
A new statistic — the modified coefficient of variation - is proposed for measuring the inequality of publication and citation counts. Its advantages include scale invariance, equal sensitivity at all levels of the distribution, allowance for random variation in publication or citation counts, and a close relationship to a probability distribution which fits observed productivity distributions. Also discussed are disciplinary differences in the distribution of productivity and the functional relationship between productivity and its determinants. Keywords
