It is shown that the method of scattering matrix is very useful for investigating the vibrational surface mode of crystal lattices. The following examples are treated: (1) A 1D lattice with one or two isotopic impurities at one of its ends. (2) A diatomic linear chain with or without an impurity at its end. (3) A 2D lattice one of whose edges is composed entirely of isotopic impurities of the same kind. (3) A 2D lattice with an isotopic impurity on one of its edges. In the case of diatomic lattice, an interesting result is obtained for the manner of appearance of the surface modes. Some discussions are given as regards the relation between the methods of scattering matrix and transfer-matrix.
