Abstract
In 144 analyses made of the blood plasma of 23 bulls the average alkaline phospha-tase level was 8.98 (range 1.99-21.03) u./lOO ml. and the avg. acid phosphatase was 2.09 (range 0.35-6.63) u./lOO ml. Diets greatly different in constitution did not elicit any perceptible influence on the levels of plasma phosphatases of bulls. No relationship was observed between the plasma level of alkaline or acid phosphatase and the plasma levels of Ca, inorganic P, or age of bulls. The plasma alkaline phosphatase conc. appears to be largely dependent upon the frequency of semen ejaculation and, more particularly, upon the number of spermatozoa yielded. The following correlation coefficients existed between the alkaline phosphatase level of plasma and various measures of semen quantity: ejaculates/day, -0.71; vol./day, -0.83; and, spermatozoa/day, -0.86. The level of acid phosphatase was not affected by the rate of semen collection or quantity of semen ejaculated. Keywords
