Abstract
A formula is derived for the moment of inertia of a freely rotating system. Although this formula is similar in form to the one derived by Inglis for a system of particles in an externally rotated potential, there are certain significant differences. The meaning of these differences is discussed and an attempt is made to clarify the question of the validity of the Inglis formula in the case of real nuclei. Keywords
