An 8-week socialization group, emphasizing the building of social interaction and communication skills, was developed for socially isolated, elderly widows. Both the content and process of the group are discussed. The focus is on method of recruitment and group composition, the role of the worker/facilitator, the effects of time, setting, and group size, and group goals. An environment of mutual support and cohesiveness developed within this group of former social isolates who had felt incapable of changing tile fact that loneliness was their primary problem.
