Abstract
To the Editor: The authors of the article entitled, "Hyperglycemia with Hypoinsulinemia in Diphenylhydantoin Toxicity" (New Eng. J. Med. 281:91, 1969) inadvertently omitted the first references to the discovery of hyperglycemia in response to this and other anticonvulsant drugs.1 , 2 In an experiment in our laboratories concerning the effects of convulsions and anticonvulsants on blood sugar levels in rabbits, it was found that diphenylhydantoin and phenobarbital in anticonvulsant doses produced a significant increase in blood sugar (p less than 0.01), and the maximum elevation after drug administration was reached within one on two hours. Diphenylhydantoin had the greater hyperglycemic effect, . . .Keywords
