Abstract
Angler response to capture of tagged “catchable” rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) was analyzed from catches in Mill Creek, Oregon. From 13.4 to 24.8% of the tagged fish released in 1975, 1976, and 1977 were reported caught. This percentage represents only 18.4 to 52.4% of the estimated catches in 1975-77. Mail responses were the least effective type of recovery system: only 1.8 to 19.5% of the tagged fish caught by anglers were eventually reported. The most effective forms of recovery involved the use of creel surveyors and tag boxes. Only 56.7% of the tags on the catchable fish were reported within a week of recapture.
