Rotational Energy Transfer Rates in HCN by Microwave Double Resonance

Abstract
Modulated microwave double resonance has been used to obtain values of collisionally induced transition rates between rotational levels of HCN. Double resonance intensities and phase shifts were measured for a number of pairs of l doublets in HCN. A computer program was written to calculate the intensities and phase shifts in terms of a set of rate constants. The rate constants were varied so as to produce the best least‐squares fit to our data. As a check, the rate constants obtained from the least‐squares fitting were used to calculate the results of some steady‐state double resonance experiments. The calculations and experimental data are found to be in excellent agreement.
