Studies on the toxicity of Indigofera Endecaphylla

Abstract
Rabbits fed green leaf, dried leaf or seed of I. endecaphylla develop severe liver damage. β-Nitropropionic acid could not be detected in the seed though it is present in the leaf. Leaf of two strains of I. endecaphylla each contained twice the amount of β-nitropropionic acid of the other strain used. This difference had no effect on the liver damage induced by feeding the three strains. Synthetic β-nitropropionic acid is not toxic to rabbit liver when force fed in amounts comparable to that in the green leaf. It appears that the toxin of Indigofera endecaphylla is not β-nitropropionic acid.
