Determination of Natural Gas Leakage via Gas Chromatography of Drill Core Samples

Abstract
A gas chromatographic method is described for determining natural gas leakage in soil and distinguishing this from “bottled propane,” sewer gas, organic decomposition, and gasoline spillage. It has been shown that the odorant often used in natural gas distribution systems contains minor amounts of hydrocarbons, which may be used to characterize the natural gas. These can be detected in drill core samples.
