Field Test of Multichannel AM-VSB Transmission Using an Erbium Doped Optical Fiber Amplifier at 1.55µm Wavelength Range in the CATV Network.

Abstract
The amplitude-modulated vestigial-sideband (AM-VSB) optical signal transmission is very attractive for Cable Television (CATV) systems because of its compatibility to current coaxial CATV systems. However, unlike frequency-modulated or digital signals, an AM-VSB signal requires a much higher received power for satisfying a required carrier to noise ratio (CNR) and a low distortion. Consequently, a loss margin of this transmission system results in about 7dB, which limits a transmission distance around 10km at 1.3µm and cannnot do a multi-drop at the optical stage.
