Abstract
The witness seminar was held at Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London on January 25 1991. It examined the background and organisation of the launch of the Social Democratic Party. Professor Kenneth Young was in the chair and Brian Brivati made the opening remarks. The following attended; their position at the time is in brackets after their names. Mike Thomas (Labour MP for Newcastle East 1974–81 and SDP 1981–83, Chair of Organisation Committee of the SDP 1981–88); Christopher Brocklebank‐Fowler (Conservative MP, King's Lynn 1970–74, Norfolk North West, 1974–81, SDP 1981–83, Member of SDP National Steering Committee 1981–82); Alec McGivan (full‐time organiser of the Campaign for Labour Victory from its launch in 1977, he was secretary to SDP steering committee and National Organiser); David Sainsbury (Member of SDP steering committee and Trustee of the party); Roger Liddle (SDP candidate and National Steering Committee Member); Lord Kennet (SDP peer); Dickson Mabon (Labour MP for Greenock 1955–81; SDP 1981–83; Member of the SDP National Committee).
