Abstract
A team of researchers from Tulane University, using a novel screening system based on genetically engineered yeast cells, reports on page 1489 of this issue that a mixture of two weakly estrogenic chemicals can be far more potent than the individual compounds. The findings are causing some scientists to take a fresh look at a controversy that has become a hot topic in the media and within Congress: Do estrogenlike pollutants pose a threat to human health? But the key question is still whether these hormonelike pollutants, much weaker than natural estrogens in the body, have enough clout to harm humans. Keywords
