Abstract
A theoretical study has been made of the structure of strong hydromagnetic ′ waves which are propagated, across a magnetic field, in a low density plasma where collisions can be neglected. Under these conditions the ions are accelerated in the direction of propagation and then brought to rest again. The thickness of the wave is determined by the characteristic distance ✓ (mc 2/4nnc 2) and the wave velocity lies between the Alfvén speed and twice the Alfvén speed. Keywords
