Abstract
Predation of the pine bark beetle Orthotomicus erosus (Col., Scolytidae) by the Syrian woodpecker (Picoides syriacus, Aves, Picidae) is described. Signs of predation are the peeling of part of the infested bark and formation of piles of beetle infested bark debris around the base of the tree. The area of peeled bark was about 40 % of the total infested bark area or 60 % of the bark infested by O. erosus. Records of predation by the woodpecker of other bark beetle species are presented. Keywords
