Abstract
As part of a study on psychological aspects of continuing care, observations were made of 22 patients aged 60–94 eating their main meal of the day. Feeding skills were individually assessed and a diary of problems compiled. Difficulties arose from ward organization, hospital management practice and district catering policy. A survey of staff opinion about mealtime arrangements revealed that there were marked differences in what nurses regarded as ‘therapeutic’ and this led to inconsistencies in care. The importance of considering psychological aspects of the patients' environment is discussed. Keywords
