Abstract
Automatic speech recognition technology has been around for well over a decade. Despite its availability there has been little significant demand from end users. This paper examines where we are in speech-recognition technology and discusses its relevance to building effective man-machine interfaces. Major factors characterizing applications benefiting from the technology are discussed. Keywords
