Bleeding During Warfarin and Aspirin Therapy in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation

Abstract
TREATMENT WITH warfarin sodium is effective for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation but many physicians hesitate to prescribe it to elderly patients.1-5 This reluctance may be ascribed to the associated risk for bleeding complications, to inconvenience for the patients, and to expected poor compliance in the elderly.1-5 The safety and tolerability of long-term oral anticoagulation therapy is not entirely clear in elderly patients, who have the highest risk for stroke6 and who may have an increased risk for bleeding complications.7
