Abstract
Index-guided laser diodes appear to be the natural choice for applications which require a coherent solid-state source operating at a single wavelength with a bandwidth of a few MHz or less. It is demonstrated that gain-guided diodes mounted in an optical cavity can provide these characteristics, and show other practical advantages over the index-guided diode systems. Keywords
