An electronic patient-contouring device

Abstract
The electronic patient-contouring device is routinely used for contours of patients treated in the prone or supine positions. Because the device cannot operate in the horizontal plane, contours of patients treated in upright positions continue to be made with plaster of Paris bandage. The device has proved to be of tremendous value when multi-level contours and dose distributions are required. It is fast, accurate, convenient and reliable. However, in order to meet necessary requirements, it became relatively complex in terms of the task to be performed. This device can be justified mainly for larger departments that treat more than 1000 new cases/yr, and where comprehensive treatment planning is the rule rather than the exception.
