Abstract
Bupivacaine hydrochloride is a local anesthetic that is chemically similar to mepivacaine hydrochloride, lidocaine hydrochloride, and prilocaine hydrochloride. It is administered for infiltration, nerve block, and peridural anesthesia, and should be particularly useful when prolonged anesthesia is required. Bupivacaine is not administered for spinal anesthesia, and should not be used for intravenous regional anesthesia because excessively high plasma levels of the drug have been observed following release of the tourniquet.
