Acidosis in Renal Disease

Abstract
MISUSE of the terms "acid" and "base" is largely to blame for much of the confusion in the literature about the pathogenesis of renal acidosis. Attempts to explain the reduction in plasma bicarbonate concentration, using an archaic terminology in which sodium and potassium are called "bases" and chloride and other inorganic anions such as sulfate and phosphate are called "acids," inevitably lead to many incongruities of fact and theory. On the other hand, if it is clearly understood at the outset that acidosis can develop only from loss of alkali or gain of acid, and if it is further understood . . .
