Abstract
A formula for the rate of change of the kinetic energy of an arbitrary finite material volume of a Newtonian continuum is deduced. The general formula is then applied to the special case of a compressible viscous fluid, generalizing the theorem of Bobyleff and Forsyth. It is shown that the vorticity and the expansion play completely separate and exactly analogous parts in the dissipation of energy associated with viscosity. Keywords
