Abstract
In 5 patients with adrenocortical carcinoma and high excretion of Porter Silber chromogens, the excretion of tetrahydro S was likewise elevated. These patients excreted from 7 to 44 mg/24 hours. Dihydro S was presumptively identified in the urine of 1 of these patients. When an adrenocortical carcinoma produced only 17-ketosteroids, tetrahydro S excretion was normal. It is suggested that 11-beta hydroxylation is the rate limiting step in the synthesis of hydrocortisone by adrenocortical carcinomas producing hydrocortisone.
