Abstract
A national system of vital statistics has been in place in the U.S. since 1900. Starting with mortality data for 10 states and several cities in 1900, the collection of birth statistics was added in 1915, and since 1933 data for both births and deaths have been available for the entire U.S. 1 Fetal deaths were added in 1922. Extensive tabulations of these data are available in annual volumes 2 and computer tapes of individual records with residence coded for every county and place above 10,000 population, have been available since 1968. 3Keywords
