Survival of a Patient with Central Nervous System Mucormycosis

Abstract
Case report of a patient with central nervous system mucormycosis complicating diabetes mellitus with acidosis. The 13 cases of central nervous system infection with the phycomycete Rhizopus oryzae, reported in the literature, are reviewed. This is the second patient to survive this complication to date. In vitro studies with numerous antibiotics failed to show enhancement of growth of the fungus. Treatment with mycostatin was considered beneficial in this case.
