Electroshock for Atrial Flutter and Atrial Fibrillation

Abstract
The electrical conversion of atrial flutter and fibrillation to normal sinus rhythm is effective and safe. However, follow-up study of 50 patients showed that sinus rhythm persisted in only 42% of those patients whose arrhythmias were initially converted. The mean follow-up time was ten months. The immediate and long-term results were much better in patients with atrial flutter and in those with atrial fibrillation of less than two years' duration.
