Abstract
The 5th chromosome recessive gene ruffled (ru) becomes incompletely dominant in crosses in which the 2nd chromosome dominant gene rounded (R) is present. This change of dominance is accompanied by the interaction of rounded and ruffled genes, resulting in a new wing character[long dash]roofed. (R/+ ru/ + ) F1 flies from this cross are then rounded ruffled roofed, and in Fa 5 distinct phenotypes appeared in a 3 rounded (R/+ +/ + ), 6 rounded ruffled roofed (R/+ ru/ + ), 3 extremely rounded ruffled roofed (R/+ ru/ru), 3 wild type ( + /+ ru/ + or +/+ +/ + ) and 1 ruffled (+/ + ru/ru) ratio. Thus when the ruffled gene is homozygous in the presence of the rounded gene, the effect of both characters, as well as the new roofed character, is exaggerated as follows: the dorso-central bristles and the hairs near them are extremely curled, the thorax has semi-vortex protrusions, the wings are extremely roofed, spread and shortened.
