Satiation of the transient stimulating effect of erotic films.

Abstract
Reanalyzed data from a 1971 study by J. Mann et al which showed either erotic films or nonsexual movies 1 time/wk for 1 mo to 85 married couples (age range, 30-64 yrs) and found that the sex films had stimulated a relatively high level of sexual activity on movie-viewing nights. There was no evidence that the sex movies had produced a "disinhibition" effect or had brought about new learning. Rather, the film had apparently activated previously acquired sexual habits which then became dormant again with the passage of time. As a further test of this stimulus-response analysis, the possibility that there was a satiation effect with repeated exposure to the erotic films was studied. Findings indicate that these movies had become less and less effective elicitors of sexual reactions with the successive presentations, which supports the appropriateness of the stimulus-response analysis.
