Deer Ticks, Ixodes dammini (Acari: Ixodidae), and Lyme Disease Spirochetes, Borrelia burgdorferi, in Maine

Abstract
Northern deer ticks, Ixodes dammini, infected with Lyme disease spirochetes, Borrelia burgdorferi, were collected by flagging from three sites in Acadia National Park on the coast of Maine. The presence of free-living nymphs at separate sites suggests that I. dammini is established, and the isolation of B. burgdorferi demonstrates the potential for human Lyme disease in this heavily visited area. Health professionals should be aware of the possibility of Lyme disease in Maine.
