Abstract
A 0.1 M EDTA solution removed the endothelium from an area of the lower abdominal aorta of the rabbit. The exposed subendothelial structures were studied with both the scanning and transmission electron microscopes. Basement membrane was usually more prominent over fenestrations of the internal elastic lamina, although fragments of the structure could also be detected over some of the microfibrils of the internal elastic lamina. On restoration of blood flow through the abdominal aorta a single layer of blood platelets adhered to the surface denuded of endothelium. On close examination of thin sections in the transmission electron microscope, basement membrane and microfibrils were observed between the adherent platelets and the internal elastic lamina. It is suggested that platelets will adhere to these structures, as well as to collagen, following injury to large arteries. This publication has 6 references indexed in Scilit:
