Crucial periods for free-environmental experience in the rat.

Abstract
Groups of rats were exposed to a complex environment for 21 days, at different periods during growth. Animals with such exposure made less errors than nonexposed rats on the Hebb-Williams maze. Those that were exposed immediately after weaning showed the best scores on the test, suggesting that there is a critical period for such exposures.
