The Effect of Light on the Senescence of Detached Cucumber Cotyledons

Abstract
Measurements of cell constituents of cotyledons of cucumber excised and kept in the light show differences from those excised and kept in the dark. These differences are partly resolved by adding glucose to the water-supply of the cotyledons in the dark suggesting that a lack of photosynthetic products is the controlling factor in their senescence. Under other circumstances different factors are operative suggesting that the first step in senescence is different under different conditions.
