Abstract
The van der Waals force of attraction between a perfectly conducting cylinder and a plane, and a sphere and a plane, was calculated. The calculations were made using first‐order electromagnetic perturbation theory coupled with the concept of zero‐point energy. In each instance the force was found to vary as the inverse fifth power of the distance of separation of the bodies. As in the case of an atom and a plane, the force between the sphere and plane was proportional to the static polarizability of the sphere. Keywords
