Effect of Progestins on Lactation in the Ewe

Abstract
Milk production by a total of 51 lactating Hampshire ewes treated either with pessaries containing no progestin or pessaries containing progestin was studied. The ewes were milked three times as follows: at the time of insertion of pessaries (day 0), removal of pessaries (day 14) and 7 days after removal of pessaries (day 21) during 2 consecutive years. Milk yields were obtained at a time when the ewes were near peak milk production. Neither of the two progestins studied, MAP or flurogestone acetate, had a significant effect on milk yield or on change in milk yield from one milking to the next within a year. There was a significant effect (P<.05) of year on change in milk yield from the day 0 to day 21. Copyright © 1970. American Society of Animal Science.
