Abstract
We show that within a hydrodynamic model the efficiency of second-harmonic generation at a vacuum-metal surface can be calculated to reasonable accuracy by a theory in which the speed of light is set to infinity. Both algebraic arguments and numerical results are presented. The simplifications allowed by an electrostatic calculation should also aid the evaluation of more sophisticated models. Keywords
