Oral Administration of Vitamin B12 Containing Cobalt60 to Rats

Abstract
A single dose of vit. B12 containing Co60 (0.89 mg. equivalent to 0.18 millicuries) was administered orally to 4 normal rats. Urine and feces collections were made daily for several days. Radioactivity as well as microbiological detns. on samples of urine and feces and on various organs showed that a major portion of the vitamin administered appears in the feces and a small fraction in the urine, although significant amts. of radioactivity were also found in blood, liver, and kidney. Expts. on distr. between 2 immiscible solvents indicated that the radioactivity was probably due to B12 and not to free inorganic Co. These data, therefore, indicate that vit. B12 given orally is absorbed, though poorly.
