Comparisons of the Goals That Parents of Stutterers and Parents of Nonstutterers Set for Their Children

Abstract
Twenty-four family units (mother, father, and stuttering child), and 24 sets of control family units (mother, father, and nonstuttering child) were given the Rotter Board and a speech test, while the mother and father, viewing the procedure from separate sound-treated rooms, were required to estimate their child''s future performance scores. The fathers of stutterers and fathers of non-stutterers differed significantly in 2 ways. Fathers of stutterers, predicted fewer speech difficulties for their children, and did not lower their estimates of performance following failure as frequently as did the fathers of non-stutterers.
