Abstract
By combining modified chromosomes from different prime types (see preceding abstract) and from secondary 2n + l forms it is possible to synthesize pure-breeding races with predicted characters, which are comparable to new species. The following types have thus been made up, each with two extra doses of the [center dot]2 half chromosome:-(a) 2n - (11 [center dot] 12)2+ (2 [center dot] 11 [center dot] 12)2, with 24 chromosomes; (b) 2n- (1 [center dot]2)2 + (2 [center dot]2)2+ ([center dot] 1)2, with 26 chromosomes; and (c) 2n- (13 [center dot] 14)2- (23 [center dot] 24)2 + (2 [center dot] 14)2+ (13 [center dot] 23)2+ ([center dot]24)2, with 26 chromosomes. For the syntheses of such types it is necessary (a) that the extra chromosomal material be transmissible through the pollen and (b) that the extra material be joined to a chromosome or chromosomal part necessary to the existence of the gametophytes. Keywords
