Abstract
Measurements of magnetic-dipole transition frequencies of occurring substitutionally for in La were made for the first time in the absence of an external magnetic field. The sensitive [ spins/ (Mc/sec linewidth)], versatile, cavity-type, variable-frequency (1000-4600 Mc/sec) spectrometer developed for these experiments is described. Measurements of magnetic-dipole transition frequencies of in La·9O made at low field by Bleaney were repeated at zero magnetic field. The results are summarized in terms of a least-squares best fit of the spin Hamiltonian to the data. The spin-Hamiltonian parameters are independent of temperature between 4° and 15°K. Theoretical interpretation of the spin-Hamiltonian parameters yielded , , and nm for the La crystal; and , and nm for the La ·9O crystal assuming . The close agreement of for the two crystals implies that is independent of the host for these two crystals.
