Generalization and exposure time as related to autokinetic movement.

Abstract
Problems in the establishment of a predetd. norm for judgments of autokinetic movement were investigated. A training procedure utilizing real movement of a point of light within a stationary visual framework produced a judgmental norm that was found to influence the subsequent judgments of the apparent movement of a stationary point of light in an otherwise dark room so as to adequately establish a predetermined norm within 2 in. of the distance used in the training procedure. Increasing the exposure time for the autokinetic stimulus appeared to produce a trend toward larger judgments; however, statistically reliable differences among the exposure times did not occur for the range of times studied which was 3-7 sec.
